"Who is Mel Ciavucco and why the hell does she have a website?" I hear you cry. I ask myself that quite a lot.
I'm a writer of short stories, novels and screenplays, trying to write my way one word at a time into a competitive, soul-crushing industry.
I really don't know. Like most writers, I like and loathe writing at the same time. I suppose I write because I have to. If I don't, my imagination will melt out of my ears and I'll crumble to the ground and get down-trodden into the grey-scale of our modern society.
I write because I feel like it's what I was born to do. Not in an 'I'm awesome' way, but in a there-are-so -many-words-in-my-head-and-they-have -to-come -out sort of way.
I'm probably just a cliché. Sorry. Ironically, one of the first things I learnt about writing was 'don't use cliché's.' But I also learnt that you have to learn the rules before you can break them.
What do I write about?
Usually either comedy or gritty drama. One extreme to the other!
I usually have a point I want to demonstrate when I start writing something. I think about the idea and which form it will be best suited to (short story, screenplay etc) and then I'll explore character ideas. I like writing anything which challenges social norms or takes a satirical look at society.
What do I actually want?
What most writers want - to be published. For people to read my stuff and take something away from it. To make people ponder their lives or the world. And to make a bit a money out of it would be nice.
A lot of people want to be writers, so it's a hard dream to have, but we just have to keep going. Our world will always need writers and artists. Creative people are good for our society. We have the power to influence and shape the world.
I learn something through everything I write, it's how I process my things in my crazy brain.
I feel like we should end on an inspirational quote, but all I've got is Frank N Furter. That wise, sexy, sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania once said,
"Don't dream it, be it."
